Summer Learning Challenge information
Hello Bulldog Families!
We have had a tremendous school year of learning in 2013 - '14! Summer is an important time for students to rest and rejuvenate their energy and motivation for the next year, but the long break from learning can cause significant regression in skills. Research suggests that students can lose as much as two months of learning during summer vacation (Johns Hopkins Center for Summer Learning, 2002; Cooper, 1996).
Please join our K - 12 Summer Learning Challenge to help your child avoid the summer slide and be school ready for the start of the 2014 - '15 school year. We are offering some simple, tangible and FREE research based methods to help students maintain their learning from this school year.
Our goal is for students to read 6 appropriately leveled books this summer, 2 each month, and to practice math skills 3 times per week for 20 minutes each time. Students who complete the Challenge and bring a list of their books read and a print out proof of the online math practice will receive a prize at their August Open House for elementary students or when they pick up schedules at the middle and high schools.

If you have questions about the Summer Learning Challenge or accessing any of the resources, please contact Scott Merkel in the Office of Curriculum and Instruction at 254-6557 or by email: email@example.com.
If your child's teacher has already set up other resources for summer practice, you can certainly use those to support your child and earn the reward in August.
Thank you for all your support of learning this school year! District Construction Updates
If you'd like to follow construction projects throughout the district, Owen-Ames-Kimball will update its blog every other week.
Kindergarten Registration Underway
It’s already time to think about enrolling your child in kindergarten! Our goal is straightforward: We endeavor to develop your child’s capabilities and instill a lifelong love of learning. We can’t wait to partner with you and your child to provide an excellent education.
Registration is underway for children 5 years old by October 1, 2014 (*see below).
Grandville Public Schools will continue to offer the following Kindergarten Programs in 2014-2015:
• Full Day: Every day in each elementary school.
• Half Day “Young Fives” option: open to all kindergarteners (usually fall birth dates) but the program will not be housed in all schools due to limited classroom availability. Bus transportation to and from the school housing the Young Fives classroom is provided. A date will be set at a later time for children with late summer and fall birth dates to receive an optional screening assessment to assist parents in making the appropriate placement decision for their children.
Please call to register your child for kindergarten by contacting the location nearest your residence:
