April 14, 2014

Dear Parents:

On Friday, March 28, I communicated that it was necessary for Grandville Public Schools to make-up one instructional day due to school cancelations this winter. I shared with you that the make-up day is scheduled for Friday, May 23, 2014, a day in which school was not originally scheduled to be in session.

Today, I am writing to you to reverse my previous announcement. Grandville Public Schools will not be making up the instructional day on May 23.

Why the change? On Friday of last week, we received news that Governor Snyder signed into law a School Aid Supplemental Bill (House Bill 4295) that gives schools with more than 174 school days on their calendars additional snow day relief provided the districts still meet the required 1,098 hours of yearly instruction. Grandville has 175 days of instruction and also exceeds the number of hours of instruction (1,098), even with the cancelations we experienced this winter. In essence, the legislation recognizes school districts like Grandville that exceed state requirements and have extra hours and days built into the school calendar.

I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience caused by the back-and-forth communication on this matter. With the March 28th announcement we were intending to share information with families as far enough in advance as possible so schedules could be adjusted as necessary. The enactment of the new law (Public Act 116 of 2014) last week causes us to reverse course. Needless to say, the news received from Lansing came as a bit of a surprise.

Again, school will not be in session on Friday, May 23, and the day will be restored as part of a four-day Memorial Day weekend as originally scheduled.

Grandville Public Schools will continue to offer the following Kindergarten Programs in 2014-2015:
